AI Competence under Art. 4 EU AI Act: Insights from the Webinar of the European AI Office

At the end of February, the European AI Office hosted a webinar on AI literacy under Art. 4 AI Act. The AI Office, as a competence center of the EU Commission, supports the development and deployment of trustworthy AI and serves as the foundation for a unified European AI governance system.

A key takeaway from the webinar: Companies must document the AI literacy of their employees; however, a formal certificate is only required for the use of high-risk AI systems. A one-time basic training is not sufficient, training should be context-specific and tailored to employees’ respective roles and prior knowledge.

A tiered training approach is recommended: a general basic course on AI fundamentals, followed by advanced, specialized training for experienced employees who use AI for specific applications.

This practice-oriented approach not only ensures compliance with regulatory requirements but also enhances the effective and secure use of AI in companies.
