The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has conducted a comprehensive investigation into the most-visited websites in the United Kingdom. The goal is to provide consumers with a genuine choice regarding the collection, storage, and use of their personal data. As part of the investigation, consent management platforms and cookies set by over 1,000 websites are being reviewed. The ICO has already examined the top 200 UK websites and found data protection violations on 134 (67%) of them. For example, cookies were set without obtaining valid consent, or sensitive personal data—such as information about sexuality—was collected for targeting purposes. This once again highlights that data protection authorities regularly conduct large-scale investigations of websites, making compliance essential.
